The other day in class when one of the groups was presenting their project, someone show a video clip of a girl that was 6'4 and was not allowed to play on the boys team. The reason that she was not allowed to play on the boys team was because she had an advantage over the boys. I have a lot of problem with this story.
The main problem I had with the story was the reason that they made her go back to the girls team. If she had an advantage over the boys that she was playing with, what kind of competition is she getting with the girls team. I am hoping that people do not take this the wrong way but I have seen 7th and 8th grade girls play basketball before and they usually are not that good at all. Even boys at that age are not that good, but they are better than the girls. If you are going to do anything, they should have found someway to move her to a higher level to play with better competition.
The other problem I have with that story is how does that girl have to feel after being moved back with the girls. She probably feels very confident that she was better than the boys, but she has to be mad that she probably will not get the same competition that she was getting. This is the opposite of the boy who played field hockey on the girls team. The parents of the girls on that team were mad that we was allowed to play on the team. This is probably what happened with this girl. All the parents of the boys did not want to she there kids get beat by a girl.
The one part that I liked about the video was the girls confidence that she was going to play in the NBA one day. For a girl to have that dream that is awesome.

Casey,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. You make excellent points about this issue and I find myself feeling the same way. I think its unfortunate that she was removed from the boys league and forced to go back and play with the girls. I've always supported a youth sports system that placed the most skilled players against one another, regardless of sex.
I think its unfair for this girl for a number of reasons. I've heard of instances where boys who are much bigger than others their age are forced to play with older boys. I think that this is kind of the same situation, because it all boils down to parents being upset about their kids losing. In the end it appears that they have sacrificed the good of one person for the well being of the majority, the majority being the boys in this case.
I also agree with you about the girls attitude. Its good to see that her confidence wasn't hurt by this and that she stills has a good attitude and high goals.
I agree with that they sacrifieced the majority for the good person. I just do not understand why they can not just move her to a more advanced level. I have heard where 8th grade boys were playing on the high school team, why not move her to a level where she can get some competition.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was awesome that she had such confidence. It made me wonder if someone like Jamie could be who David Stern was talking about when he suggested that a woman could one day play in the NBA?
